Teeth that have developed a cavity or another form of minor damage can often be easily repaired with a dental filling. A cavity consists of a small hole in the surface of a tooth. This is typically caused by harmful acids that are present in plaque. Once a cavity has formed, it should be sealed with a dental filling as quickly as possible in order to prevent bacteria and food particles from accessing the inner portion of the tooth and causing further damage.
At Dale Rottman, DDS, we provide patients with tooth-colored fillings that look natural. Also referred to as composite fillings, tooth-colored fillings are comprised of quartz and glass fillers housed in a resin medium. This type of filling is incredibly durable, being designed to fully handle the pressure associated with chewing hard foods. Dr. Rottman and his team consider tooth-colored fillings to be superior to metal fillings due to the fact that tooth-colored fillings are not prone to leaking, and they add to the overall strength of the tooth.
When applying a composite filling, the first step is to carefully remove any decay and any existing filling material that is present within the tooth. Once the tooth is clean, a filling material that matches the natural color of the tooth is applied, completely sealing any voids that exist. Using a dental curing light, this material is hardened so that it achieves the consistency and strength of a healthy, natural tooth. The process is completed by polishing and shaping the tooth to give it a natural appearance. After receiving a filling, a patient will be able to eat normally and brush and floss their teeth as usual.
