Dental sealants consist of a thin layer of acrylic that is painted onto an individual’s back teeth. Once applied, sealants provide the teeth with an effective barrier against harmful bacteria and acids. Additionally, sealants smooth out the deep grooves and fissures found on a person’s molars to make them easier to clean and maintain. Overall, this treatment method is very effective in preventing teeth from experiencing damage and decay.
The deep grooves and fissures found on a person’s back teeth are home to roughly 75 percent of all tooth decay found inside the mouth. These areas are known to be very difficult to reach, even when a person is brushing and flossing regularly. By applying dental sealants and smoothing out their rough surfaces, an individual’s back molars become much easier to clean, and cavities are less likely to occur. When cared for properly, a set of dental sealants should remain intact for several years.
Many people who receive dental sealants are younger patients who are still developing proper brushing and flossing practices. In particular, baby teeth often benefit greatly from dental sealants because they commonly feature deep grooves and fissures. Many adults also choose to have dental sealants applied as a way of protecting their teeth.
Applying Dental Sealants
The process of applying dental sealants can be completed in just one visit to our clinic. The process is quick and easy, only requiring a couple of minutes per tooth. The first step is to thoroughly clean and dry any tooth that is designated for sealing. Once the teeth are dry, etching solution is used to roughen the outer surfaces of these teeth so that the sealant coating can bond more easily. The teeth are then painted with acrylic sealant, and the coating is allowed to dry completely. The process is completed after the teeth have been fully sealed, and the deep grooves and fissures have been made entirely smooth.
